Dictionary Day 2018
"Mrs. Broam, can I borrow a hat? I want to dress up like you in the Dictionary Parade!" I'm honored and humbled to be considered an illustration of the word influential, "power to produce effects on actions and opinions of others."
I've also enjoyed the honor to represent optimistic: "someone who thinks on the bright side of things"
and
empathetic: "someone who is understanding"
Third Graders, your vivid vocabulary fills my bucket. Thank you so, so very much.💙💚💛💜

BOO on Thursday
Some folks liked to feel scared this time of year . . . some folks don't. ALL Feelings are OK, even when they don't feel okay . . . When you are scared and don't like it, talk to someone about it! Maybe you could take a deep breath, go for a walk, or think about a happier moment~find a way to move the feeling so that (1) nobody gets hurt and (2) nothing gets broken. #mrsbroamhats #ALLfeelingsareOK

Whooo! Whooo!
An owl twist for Monday! Perch on your toes in a crouch. Reach your hands toward your elbows behind your back. Look over your shoulder and take 3-5 breaths. Twist and look over the opposite shoulder too! Did you know owls can rotate their necks 270 degrees? Their bodies are specially designed to power their brains and eyes with a blood-pooling system when the neck movement cuts off circulation! Whooo! Whooo! Knew?? #mrsbroamhats #mrsbroamMOVES

Power of Words
What you think about, you bring about. The thoughts you think, the words you speak, the tone and way in which you deliver them have power. Today I'm thinking about the strength of positivity. "Namaste" is a Sanskrit word that means the part of me that is special and unique honors and appreciates the part of you that is special and unique, and, together, we can make the world a better place.
Here's a song I learned to share this idea:
"Namaste is what we say to the good in you from the good in me.
Say 'Namaste,' everyday, and the world will live in harmony." 🌍
My shirt today says, "Gnomaste"~I'm thinking that's great way for a short lady to share a TALL THOUGHT on Thursday!💕

Breathe to Bloom on Wednesday
We are practicing many ways to take a deep breath in 2nd Grade this week. Breathing helps you work in your "downstairs brain" (the prefrontal cortex or "wise leader"). This is the part of the brain used to make wise decisions. Breathing helps your body calm. It soothes the nervous system, calming jangly nerves. Breathing helps your whole self work in a more efficient and quality way! If you "breathe like a flower," open the fingers wide on the inhale, spreading the petals of the flower blossom, and then gently close the fist on the exhale. Want to know more creative ways to breathe? Check out Mrs. Broam's online breathing toolbox: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing #mrsbroamhats #takeadeepbreath

Monkey Mind Monday
A monkey mind is when you have a lot of chatter in your brain, and it's hard to think . . .
What can you do?
First, take a seat. Feel your bum on the chair. Place your feet flat on the ground. Sit up tall. Take off your glasses, if you wear them.
Bring your thumbs together.
Then close the hands so palms are touching.
Rub your hands together to create heat.
Then loosely cover your eyes with your hands and cradle your noggin!
Take some deep breaths, and calm your monkey mind on Monday!
Thank you, Cassie Stephens of Teacherin' in Tennessee, for sharing your good ideas online so I can share with others: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRKpNaVaP84&list=LLiaze_-7Mlz6aBSFU0Vg4sw !!
