Our last character lesson this week is about learning how to GRIT IT OUT with Winter, Guinness world record-holder for being the youngest person to run a marathon on every continent.

Today I had more hats than heads!  Students learn how to LAUNCH IT NOW with Trisha, developer of an anti-cyberbullying app and a Global Finalist in the 2014 Google Science Fair.  This makes me think "Don't BUG anyone on ANY planet!"

BUGGY Feelings

BUGGY feelings are the unpleasant ones .  .  . we don't want to feel them, but we gotta feel them to find pleasant feelings again!  What can you do when you are sad, lonely, nervous, or scared???   You can:


  • talk to someone about it
  • listen to music
  • play with your pet
  • ride your bike
  • write it down
  • draw a picture
  • play with your toys
  • take a deep breath


Whatever you choose, REMEMBER

(1) Nobody gets hurt (including YOU) and (2) Nothing gets broken

and it'll be an okay way to work through the unpleasant feeling.  :-)

Turtle Tuesday

Today we're exploring turtles and GRIT (Growth, Resilience, Integrity, Tenacity)!


Here's how you can pretend to make a turtle with your hand!  
Open your hand wide and place your thumb on your palm.

Wrap your fingers around your thumb .  .  . 

and turn your hand upside down!  You can rest your turtle on your lap, if you like.

Watch D.O.G.S. Orientation TONIGHT!

We have 110+ registered for tonight's Watch D.O.G.S. Orientation! Thank you to Ken Lake and Rob Shirley for supplying BoJangles chicken and biscuits! We'll have green beans & mac & cheese to make a full meal. If you haven't trained to be a Watch D.O.G.S., please join us in the school cafeteria. The meal for those registered begins at 6:00 and Roger Hanna and Steven Murray will get the training started at 6:30 and wrap as close to 7:00 as possible. Lorri Johnson will be available to assist in the computer lab for those who want to register for a day of volunteering before you leave the meeting. You'll also have directions to complete this process on your SmartPhone if you have one. Thank you for volunteering to support the learning community at Pleasant Hill Elementary! Additional orientations are scheduled for 11/14/16 and 2/7/17.

HIPPO-Hurray for Thursday!  What is a SMALL thing you could do today to make a BIG difference in the quality of your Thursday?  Did you know stretching for 20 seconds can have a HUGE effect on your energy levels?  Close your eyes for 2 minutes to relieve the physical and mental strain of phones, TVs, computers, etc.  Even it's just for 5 minutes, get up and get out for a walk!  It'll get your blood flowing, muscles moving and reset your brain!  Or smile, make a phone call, send a note -- tell someone why they matter!  It'll make your day and their day better!  It's the little things .  .  .  :-)
