PHES Book Fair Luau

Aloha, Parents and Families!

Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills children learn, it is the one you can influence the most. We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.

Our Scholastic Book Fair theme – Book Fair Luau! It’s a Reading Celebration! – is part of an exciting reading event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.

Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair. Please note: you will need to calculate the seven (7) percent tax for your total purchase. Also, students will not browse the fair to complete wish lists this year, but rather they should come prepared to shop (money-in-hand) during their first visit. We will accept cash, checks (made out to PHES) and MasterCard/Visa. See you there!

Book Fair Dates: January 30th- February 7th
Shopping Hours: 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Special Events: PTA Bingo Night, Feb. 3rd—we’re open until 7:00 p.m.

Teddy Bear Friend

On Wednesday, I wore my teddy bear hat/ears! Mrs. Clark, a fellow PHES school counselor, shared with PHES Cougars about how to be a "teddy bear friend." Be a friend that is a good listener and kind. Be a friend that makes others feel comfortable and safe to be a "teddy bear friend!"

Snow Hats, Rain Hats--EARS to being READY for an ADVENTURE?

I've been wearing a combination of snow and rain hats the past week or so. My Grandma Rawls wore this fun one that looks like an umbrella on your head that I enjoyed sharing! The weather has been up and down, back and forth this winter.

Yesterday, I wore my BIG EARS to remind us to BE GOOD LISTENERS! 2nd graders discussed what it takes to be a good listener last week. Not JUST your ears . . . ask a 2nd grader!

Today, I'm READY for an ADVENTURE! I'll don my SAFARI HAT as we continue with Benchmark Testing--January 23--February 2.

Perfect Square -- PERFECT Activity

I reread the book Perfect Square by Michael Hall to 4th Grades this week. We discussed about how often we have to "make lemonade outta lemons" (find something "good" when confronted with challenging experiences). We reminded ourselves about Pete the Cat's "Cattitude!" You gotta "keep walking along and singing your song." I'll take some pictures of these students creative responses. They created snowflakes, parks, fountains, oceans, critters, trees . . . I thought it was the coolest when a couple of students combined the pictures they created! You CAN find that silver lining--it's not so easy, but you can. We discussed about how truly we should be THANKFUL for the challenges because it's because of them WE GROW! Even the square in the story feels "confined" and "rigid" on the "uneventful" day . . .

SO the next time you're wrinkled, torn, injured, damaged, cut, broken, poked full of holes . . . and it's gonna happen . . . consider it an OPPORTUNITY! Keep walking along and singing your song, make something beautiful, and make this world a better place!

CHILL

I'm wearing my "SNOWMAN" hat this week! Thank to my special PHES Cougar who shared it me as a holiday gift!! A year ago we enjoyed snow (and ice) that turned into a week long holiday! Isn't it funny how different the weather is . . . stay dry, enjoy the warmer weather and look forward to a l-o-n-g holiday weekend this weekend. School is a half day tomorrow--dismissal is 11:40. Friday, January 13 is a holiday for students and workday for teachers. EVERYBODY celebrates Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 16.

Penguins are PERFECT for a New Year!

It was a great first week of school in 2012! Mrs. Andis and I enjoyed teaching a lesson on Sean Covey's 3rd Happy Kid Habit--"Put First Things First--Work First, Then Play." It was a great lesson that included a plug for the Porkchop Productions performance next Thursday morning: The Emperor's New Clothes! We discussed the life cycle of the emperor penguin--what a tough critter! Dad takes care of the egg in minus 70 degrees Celsius . . . for four weeks . . . in TOTAL DARKNESS. Mom treks 100 miles away to feed, packing on the pounds so she can relieve Dad, who by this point has lost approximately half his body weight. Try your hand at creating a "PENGUIN" acrostic to share how the emperor penguin exemplifies Happy Kid Habit #3! While supplies last, Mrs. Broam has penguin duckies to share with those would be poets out there in Cougar Land!

Have a great weekend! The weather should be BEAUTIFUL. I have a meeting Monday morning so I'll check in with you all Tuesday!
